Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving break. This is a quick update from ESU 9.

November Board Meeting

The ESU 9 Board met on Monday, November 20th. Several items related to the new facility were addressed. First, the board took action to purchase thirty (30) new conference room tables. The tables match those currently at the new facility, and “nest,” so they are easier to move and store. Secondly, the board approved the “design-bid-build” project delivery method. This process delineates responsibilities including the involvement of architects and construction companies. Finally, selling the current ESU 9 property was discussed. We will follow a process and hire a real estate agency/broker to assist with the sale of our current property.


The board accepted three resignations including Pam Primrose and Diane Trausch, both preschool paras. We are currently searching for para-educators for the Adams County Early Learning Center. If you have suggestions, please let Jessica Moore or I know.

The board also accepted the resignation of Janice Hughes, administrative and board secretary, effective December 31, 2017. We wish all three employees well with their future plans.

ESU 9 Strategic Plan Update

It seems like a long time ago when we met on opening day, August 14th. During that time, we worked on the ESU 9 Strategic Plan. To reiterate, the plan included Mission, Vision, Value Statements, Strengths, Weaknesses (Challenges), Opportunities & Threats. This information and other relevant updates will be shared when we meet on Friday, December 22nd.

ESU 9 All Staff Meeting Reminder

As alluded to above, we will hold our ESU 9 All Staff Meeting on Friday, December 22nd on the Central Community College Campus-Cottonwood Room (basement of student union).

Hello ESU 9,

As I write this post Nebraska is experiencing an awesome fall day. I hope your day is awesome too. Here are some important updates regarding ESU 9.

ESU 9 Board Meeting

The ESU 9 Board met this past Monday night. The board accepted the resignation of Mr. Dave Fisher who admirably served ESU 9 for 30 years. Thank you Dave for your leadership and years of service.

The board also voted to hire Mrs. Brittany Henderson who will work in our Transportation and Deaf & Hard of Hearing Departments. 

The board also voted to hire Mrs. Amy Donley, who is a speech-language pathologist.

Meal Reimbursement

The reimbursement for meals will remain the same for this school year. Here is a breakdown:

Breakfast: $7.00

Lunch: $11.00

Dinner: $23.00

Facility Update

As many of you know, we held a second tour of the new facility on October 5th. Thanks to those who attended. If anyone who has not yet toured the facility and would like to, please contact me directly.

The ESU 9 Building, Grounds, Transportation and Technology Committee will be meeting later this month to discuss the sale of our current property. Required renovations at the new facility will also be addressed. Additional parking spaces and signage options are also on the agenda.

Finally, you may recall that Gary Needham set up an electronic suggestion box for the new facility. We initially received around a dozen suggestions. Thank you to those of you who shared important thoughts and ideas. They were truly insightful and appreciated. If you have further suggestions, you can enter them here: New Facility Suggestion Box.

Imminent Move

It’s hard to believe, but moving day (July 1, 2018) will come up quickly. We are asking that you take a bit of time now and in the coming months to start tidying up and packing what can be packed now. This is the time to make decisions on older items that do not get used or are antiquated and have not been used in a long period of time.

Each box (or item) that will be moved to the new facility will be color coded and have a number on it that will correspond with the office/location at the new facility.

Many of you are “scanning” documents, so you will not have to move file cabinets of antiquated paper. Thank you for taking this initiative (WAY TO GO RHO!!).

ESU 9 Teaching & Learning Conference

This popular conference will be held next Monday, October 23rd. Kudos to all of those who make this a wonderful ESU 9 event possible!!

Hello ESU 9 Employees,

I hope this note finds you well. I am writing to share some updates with you.

As you know, we held a new facility tour on Thursday, September 7th, so employees could walk through the new building. This was very helpful to everyone. First, employees got to see first hand the new facility, and after seeing the layout and specifics, they had the ability to ask questions. I will be sending out another survey in the near future, so those that wish to take a tour (or see the facility again) may do so. Finally, Gary Needham has sent you a “suggestion box“. Please feel free to enter your comments. We have received eleven so far. Thank you!

Board Meeting

Last night during the ESU 9 Board meeting, the board approved the 2017-18 ESU 9 budget. They also voted to approve the hiring of Kim Laravie, a para-professional at the Adams County Early Learning Center. Welcome Kim!!

Support Staff Changes

We have many duty transitions going on right now due to the retirement of three long-term clerical staff members.  Conversations regarding the changes in duties are ongoing; we are not handing any one person the duties belonging to each of the retirees.  Here are some updates that have a procedural impact on many ESU staff:

  • Deliveries will now be coordinated through Janine Uden.  Additionally, outbound deliveries waiting for a ride will be in a cabinet by Janine’s desk.  Each school has a magnetic label indicating if items are waiting to be taken.  Please check the labels on the cabinet if you are in the office and heading to a school.  If you have items that need to get to a particular school, this is how the deliveries will be coordinated.
  • Janine has taken many of the duties that Dolores Utecht performed for the Media and Technology Department. The Media Center phone number has been added to the main phone pool since the media staff are now located in different parts of the ESU 9 building.  (The 18+ program has its own number, published in the personnel directory).  You may also reach 18+ via the main  ESU 9 phone number.
  • As of September 1st, Jan Hughes is now half-time until December 22 when she officially retires. We are distributing Jan’s duties to relevant parties. Additional updates will be passed on later.
  • Cindy Paczkowski will be taking the early morning bus route changes, and Cindy Nejezchleb will cover the rest of the day when Pat retires. Pat’s last day is Friday, September 18th.
  • Pat has worn many hats, and her retirement is recent enough that we are still working through some of the details.  Please contact Cindy Nejezchleb if you have questions, and she will either answer them or point you in the right direction.

Hello ESU 9!

The year is off to a great start!

This is a quick update to let you know about some important news.

Strategic Plan Work

I want to sincerely thank you for your work on opening day. You may recall we talked about Mission, Vision, Values and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats). I have entered all the information into a Google spreadsheet. The Management Team will be analyzing the data on Friday, August 25th.

New Building

The ESU 9 Board voted to purchase a new building during last evening’s board meeting. The new building, currently owned by Contryman & Associates, is located at 5807 Osborne Drive West (next to the Surgical Center). Last night’s vote was the end to a very, very long journey. It was also the start of a new chapter as we move forward. Moving to the new building will take place over time, starting in mid-April.

In the near future, we will be setting up a couple of evening dates so ESU 9 employees can tour the new facility. Tours are not required and are optional.


Also last night, the ESU 9 Board accepted the resignations due to retirement of long term employees Dolores Utecht and Pat O’Donnell. Dolores and Pat have worked for ESU 9 for 32 and  29 years respectively. So you know, Dolores’ retirement party will be held here at the service unit on Thursday, August 31st. It starts at 4:00 p.m. We do sincerely thank both Dolores and Pat for their incredible work and wish them well as they live the next chapter of their lives.
